Institute for Language and Literature „Petar II Petrović Njegoš“is a scientific-research unit within the MASA. It was founded in 2007, when the Presidency of the Academy passed the Decision on renaming and extending the activities of the Njegoš Institute. The main activities of the Institute are: linguistic research, literary-historical research and Njegošology.
Scientific research within the framework of linguistic research is organized primarily through the project Montenegrin dialectic-onomastic complex, which involves the study of Montenegrin dialects and folk speech through collection, arrangement and processing (accent, grammatical and semantic) of the representative lexics. The Institute also works on the preparation for the publication of dialectical dictionaries and other lexicographic editions, which is regulated by the Academy Publishing Act.
The main activities of literary-historical research are critical editions of the Montenegrin classics, as well as the production of monographs about writers and cultural history. In the field of Njegošology, the primary activity is the preparation and publication of critical editions of Njegoš's works, as well as the publication of studies on Njegoš's work and language.
